About This Visa

Indian ordinary-passport holders need a visa. They are not visa-free. Usual tourist path: single-entry short-term tourism eVISA (up to 90 days). File at a Japan Visa Application Centre (VFS Global) in India. The visa is electronic — not a sticker.

They must show the visa issuance notice on a phone with internet at the airport. A PDF, screenshot, or printout is not accepted.

The Embassy fee for Indian nationals is INR 500 from 1 July 2026. VFS also charges its service fee. Transit visa is abolished.

  • Itinerary with the flight or ship number and the arrival and departure dates
  • Proof you can pay the trip, if you pay yourself

Hotel or ticket payment is not required at apply. They may ask for more papers.

About This Visa

Use this when they qualify on the official India multiple-visa list. Stay is up to 90 days each time. Validity is up to 5 years. Tourism, business, or visiting people. No paid work.

They need an ICAO machine-readable or e-passport and must fit one official category (repeat Japan trips, Japan plus G7 trips, or enough funds — or be the spouse or child of the person with funds). File at VFS. Same INR 500 Embassy fee for Indian nationals.

  • ICAO MRP / e-passport
  • Papers for their category: old Japan / G7 stamps, proof of funds, or spouse / child proof

If they apply outside India, they also need proof they live there legally.

How to apply

  1. File at VFS Japan in India — https://visa.vfsglobal.com/ind/en/jpn/. The Embassy New Delhi page says no prior appointment.
  2. Apply from 3 months before travel.
  3. Pay INR 500 (Indian nationals) plus the VFS service fee.
  4. Wait at least 5 working days. They will not speed it up for a flight date.

Who can apply

  • Indian ordinary-passport holders need a visa.
  • Usual tourist path: eVISA through VFS. Multiple only if they fit the official India list.
  • Transit visa is abolished.
  • Diplomatic and official passports file at the Embassy with a note verbale. Not this tourist file.

eVISA

  • From 1 April 2024 in India: single-entry tourism, up to 90 days.
  • For Indian and other residents in India who need a short-term visa.
  • Still file at VFS. The visa is electronic.
  • Show the visa issuance notice on a phone with internet at the airport. PDF, photo, screenshot, or printout is not accepted.

Photo and uploads

  • One photo with the visa form, as the form asks.
  • eVISA: show the issuance notice on a phone with internet. Do not rely on a printout.
